What does that city job title actually mean?
City job titles can be hard to read. Pick one to see what the work is, which majors fit, and how the city hires for it.
Open civic micro-projects
Short, real tasks posted by city departments. Your team of 3 or 4 does one as the regular project in a career-education class you already take: 5 to 6 weeks, about 3 hours a week each. Each finished project becomes a scored work sample.
My scored work samples
This is what a hiring manager can see, but only if you choose to share it. Your grades and college records are never shared. Everyone who finishes, qualifying or not, gets a certificate, written city feedback and a reference on request.

My part: I combined three yearly spreadsheets (no names or addresses) and fixed 212 duplicate rows. My teammates built the chart. Our team scored 14 of 16 and my own part scored 4 of 4, so the college paid me $300.

Post a civic micro-project
A good project takes 5 to 6 weeks for one team of 3 or 4, at about 3 hours a week per student in place of their usual course project. It needs no private data and gives the city something it can use. The instructor gives weekly feedback; you join a kickoff call and a midpoint call and score the final work (plan on 8 to 12 hours in all). Each student also hands in a one-page "my part" memo and gives a 10-minute walkthrough, which can be recorded or written; you score it 1 to 4. The college pays $300 to each student whose team scores 12 or more of 16 and whose own part scores 3 or more.
Interview pool
Scored students who chose to share their work. A student qualifies with a team score of 12 or more of 16 and an own-part score of 3 or more of 4. Each qualifying student gets a guaranteed first interview for Student Aide / Intern I openings (a proposed part-time class: 12 completed units, enrolled in 6 or more, no GPA minimum).
